Dial

On the Jewish Town Hall in Prague hangs a clock with Hebrew numerals that runs counter-clockwise, because Hebrew is read from right to left. It has kept time that way since 1764.

Our 2026 Edition was inspired by it. The 1764 is something else: it is that dial, on your wrist. Black face, gold numerals, no emblem, no decoration, nothing between you and the original idea.

We didn't copy the clock. We made a new watch that carries it.

The hands are our own design, drawn for this dial and no other. The case is the same 38 mm we build every ALTNEU on. The movement runs backwards on purpose, like the clock, and keeps time to the second, unlike the clock.

Two dials, one idea. Classic sets every numeral upright, the way you'd read it. Turned rotates each numeral toward the center of the dial, the way it sits on the tower. Same watch inside. Choose the face you want to look at every day.

Japanese Miyota "Reverse" movement. 38 mm. Gold or silver plated. Quick-release strap in black or brown leather. Designed by our family in Prague's Jewish Quarter, five minutes from the clock it's built on.

ALTNEU 1764 quick-release strap

Change the strap in seconds

No tools. No jeweler. Slide the pin, swap the strap, done.

Every 1764 comes with a quick-release strap: a small lever on the back lets you take the strap off and put another one on in about ten seconds. We timed it.

We designed the 1764 around black and brown leather. The dial does the talking, the strap stays quiet. Both fit any 1764 case, so keep one on the watch and one in the drawer.

Bigger wrist? The same strap comes in an XL length, sold separately. And every strap in our range fits, if you want to experiment.

Questions

Before you buy the 1764

How is the 1764 different from the 2026 Edition?

Same case, same movement, same quick-release straps. The difference is the dial. The 2026 Edition has a white face with the Town Hall emblem in the center. The 1764 has a black face with gold Hebrew numerals and no emblem, closer to how the original clock actually looks. If you want the watch that tells the story, take the 2026. If you want the watch that looks like the clock, take the 1764.

Classic or Turned dial, which should I choose?

Both read backwards. On the Classic, each numeral stands upright so it reads instantly. On the Turned, each numeral is rotated toward the center of the dial, which is how the numerals sit on the tower. Classic is the everyday choice. Turned is for people who want it exactly like the original.

Will it fit my wrist?

The 1764 ships with our standard leather strap, which fits most wrists (up to about 19 cm). If yours is bigger, the same strap comes in an XL length that fits up to about 21 cm, sold separately. It clicks on in seconds, no tools needed, and if you're not sure which length to take, write to us and we'll tell you.

How do you read a watch that runs backwards?

Exactly the same way, just mirrored. The hands run counter-clockwise because Hebrew reads right to left, the same as the clock on Prague's Jewish Town Hall since 1764. Most people are fluent within a day or two. After that you read the time normally and enjoy watching other people do a double take.

What movement is inside?

A Japanese Miyota quartz movement in its "Reverse" version, built to run counter-clockwise. Accurate to the second, battery lasts years, any watchmaker can service it. It's not a mechanical automatic, and that's on purpose: we wanted a watch that tells the right time every day, not one that needs looking after.

Shipping and returns

We ship from Prague worldwide. You have 30 days from delivery to return the watch, no questions asked. If anything comes up, write to us. A person answers, not a bot.
