This high-quality ceramic mezuzah, made in Prague, resembles the Ceremonial Hall in Prague's Jewish Quarter. The Prague Burial Society used a ceremonial hall (beit tahara) next to the Old Jewish Cemetery. The current Neo-Romanesque building was constructed in 1906–1908 on the site of an older structure. This building served its original purpose until the end of the First World War. Since 1926, the building has been part of the Jewish Museum in Prague.
The Prague Burial Society (Hevra Kaddisha) is a significant historical Jewish institution that was founded in 1564 in Prague by by Rabbi Eliezer Ashkenazi, and its statutes were written by Rabbi Judah Loew ben Bezalel (Maharal). Its primary purpose was to ensure that all Jews received a proper burial according to Jewish traditions, regardless of their financial situation. Activities included visiting the sick, praying at the bedside of the dying, the ritual preparation of the body (tahara), the funeral itself, and comforting the mourners.
